The days sure blur together these days, as I’m sure you’ve noticed. One of the few things that helps me know what day it is, is putting together this weekly news letter for y’all. This week, lots of great stuff in! Also some great used stuff going up on the site lately as well. So check it out. Also, we’re going to move some of our hours around.. after a 3 day weekend this weekend (CLOSED Monday Oct 12th) our pick-up hours will be Tuesday – Saturday 11 – 5. Hopefully that will help some of you out who can’t make it on the weekdays.

Budos Band: Long in the Tooth (Daptone) LP
Die cut cover, Silver & Black Splatter Vinyl, illustration by Brian (of The Budos Band). 15 years after the release of their debut album, Daptone’s Royal Court from Staten Island delivers a truly epic collection of new material that finds the group further bridging the gap between the farfisa-fueled Ethio-Funk stylings of their early recordings, with the psychedelic, Sabbath-inspired hellfire of late. The title track and lead single, Long in the Tooth, jumps out of the speakers with a heavy drum break (reminiscent of the B-Boy approved grooves of their early output), drenched in a pulsating, hallucinatory wall of organ, menacing horns, and a rugged guitar riff that pummels the listener into Budonian submission. Imagine Link Wray and Mulatu Astatke collaborating on a Italian horror soundtrack and you’re getting close.

k.burwash: lolt qs (Saw-Whet) LP
Shameless self promotion…. What is there to say about k.buwash’s “lotl qs”? While preparing for it’s release, I’ve listened to this album front to back at least 20 times. And that doesn’t include the earlier versions. I’ve become infatuated with the journey of sound it has to offer. It reminds me of some of my ambient favourites of the past (Biosphere’s “Substrata”, Tomáš Dvořák’s “Machinarium”, and the latter half of Minilogue’s “Animals”). The music instills images in the mind that eventually become benchmark imaginations that come back with each album play-through. The opener “still, when” instantly plunges you into a tornado of light and colour which slowly disappears leaving you floating in the air. “Waves of Coloured Light” is different from the rest of the album in the way of which it develops; The track is a slow mountain climb towards the summit which gives off an auditory spectacle of piercing bright, powerful sound. “Haut Spring” feels like, well, relaxing in a hot spring; perhaps while under the stars with someone you love. This track has an honest feeling of comfort to it which I absolutely adore. The comfort continues into the final track “Brian on the Beach” but this time it’s less momentary and deeper, more permanent. I can’t get over how perfect of an ending this is. It just leaves you with that “everything’s gonna be alright” feeling, ya know? “lotl qs” is K.Burwash’s second full-length album; a dazzling follow-up to his heavy-hitting debut Moonlanding (released on Pseudo Laboratories). It is an honour that Saw-whet Records gets to share this music with you. Take the time to let your mind journey beyond while forgetting those daily tensions. Altin Gun: On (Bongo Joe) LP
Available again! On their debut album ‘On’ (Bongo Joe Records), the band show what happens when you open doors between Turkish folk songs which were passed on from generation to generation on the one hand and a dirty blend of funk rhythms, wah-wah guitars and analogue organs on the other. The Amsterdammers who come from various backgrounds (Turkish but also Indonesian and Dutch) comfortably create their work in the adventurous no-man’s land that exists between these two worlds. Older generations of Turkish musicians have also experimented with opening doors between previously unconnected sonic worlds. During the seventies, artists such as Baris Manço, Selda Bağcan and Erkin Koray practiced a way of songwriting and composing similar to Altin Gün’s. They took the music played during the festive occasions and serious formalities of their childhood, folk songs backed by a traditional Turkish string instrument called the saz. To this, they added the techniques and vibes of their times and the result then went on to become a distinct Turkish sound during 1972-1977 which even today still sounds rich, danceable and (alright then!) heavily mind bending. The Altin Gün band members first encountered this music in various ways: through their upbringing, via friends or after finding life changing compilations in record shops. Their own personal discoveries eventually led them to collectively open doors to crowds everywhere across Europe, from the Into the Great Wide Open festival in Netherlands to Istanbul, from Ghent to Geneva and from Ravenna back to Amsterdam; people all across Europe fell in love with Altin Gün’s unusual combination of familiar sounds. Manço, Bağcan and Koray have all influenced Altin Gün, but their foremost inspiration is Neşet Ertaş, a Turkish folk musician whose musical legacy is invaluable. Comparisons are almost impossible to make but imagine someone with the same impact and status as Bob Dylan or George Gerschwin and you’re getting close. Many of the songs he wrote have become standards in Turkey, national treasures which are cherished up until the present day. Altin Gün retain the lyrical and thematic structure of Ertaş’s songs, though they often alter their time signatures and add fuzzy bass sounds, sweltering organ sounds and raw saz riffs. Ertaş wrote the majority of the songs on the album even if these are hardly recognisable after all the work Altin Gün have done on them. The songs have universal themes such as love, death, desire and destiny. It is touching music that makes you want to move and massages your soul all at once. Music that sounds familiar but different. Music that’s deeply emotional even for someone who doesn’t speak a word of Turkish. Let Altin Gün open that door for you and get ready to indulge in their fresh and beautiful sound.

Cut Worms: Nobody Lives Here Anymore (Jagjaguwar) LP
Nobody Lives Here Anymore is the haunted reverie of an American landscape in-and-out of Max Clarke’s mind. Recorded between May and November 2019 in Memphis, Tennessee, the album is a snow globe of the mid-twentieth-century’s popular music filled with jangling guitars, honkey tonk pianos, and Telstar organs. Max immediately started writing material for his sophomore LP after an extensive 18-months of touring. Mining his life-long devotion to the lost American songbook for inspiration, he stockpiled nearly 30 new songs by the time he flew to Memphis to work with producer Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording Studio. Unlike earlier works that were meticulously demoed, Max opted for rough drafts to capture something more immediate and honest. Most of the initial takes were tracked live with Noah Bond on drums, while Max sang and played rhythm guitar. Max then built lush arrangements around these intimate performances. A skeleton crew of friends and Memphis all-stars were called in to lay down pedal steel, sax, and strings. When all was said and done, they had recorded 17 new cosmic Americana gems. Max sees this record as a figurative shot across the bow to the modern attention span. He says Nobody Lives Here Anymore is about “throwaway consumer culture and how the postwar commercial wet dreams never came true, how nothing is made to last.” He considers the golden years of a society on its last leg with poignant curiosity, suggesting not only that nobody lives the American dream, but that nobody lives here, in this moment, anymore. “It’s about homesickness for childhood, for a place that never really existed,” says Max.  A loss of innocence lingers through this 80-minute opus as Max attempts to harbor love and meaning inside a world that sold itself out. While his grand anthems overflow with timeless pop charm, his ability to dig deeper than lollipops and holding hands sets his work apart from the days of 45s and Top of the Pops.

Fools: Fools’ Harp Vol. 1 (Music From Memory) LP
Gentle new music on MFM from Grizzly Bear (the U.S band) founder member, Christopher Bear. Chilled out, soothing and with a gentle tweeness – some of which reminds of all that lovely pillowy electronica from the early 2000s (City Centre Offices, Expanding, Morr, Mille Plateaux, Leaf etc etc). Cool stuff to drift off to. TIP! The label Say: Music From Memory are delighted to present Fools’ debut album ‘Fools’ Harp Vol. I’ and the first solo release of American musician Christopher Bear. Drummer and multi-instrumentalist of cult Indie band ’Grizzly Bear’, ‘Fools’ is a pseudonym that Christopher has been using while working on his independent music making for some time now. Often finding the structure and form of a more traditional ‘song’ and the concept of an album too restrictive, Christopher finally set aside a six week period in the summer of 2019 to explore the possibilities of jamming alone and seeing where it took him: recording each instrument himself and then responding through improvisation to his own recordings, Whilst doing most of the recording in a digital set up, he also set out to capture some of the same mental and sonic space from his time recording on 4-track. The results of these Fools’ sessions, he explains, feel “almost more like a mixtape than an ‘album’ per se” to him. With a sense of the dichotomy between nostalgia and the future, ‘Fools’ Harp Vol. I’ seeks to transport the listener to a world both familiar and comforting, exploring something undiscovered while maintaining a deep sense of openness and curiosity.  The album will be released in vinyl and digital formats with a cassette release to follow including additional bonus tracks.

Freak Heat Waves: Zap the Planet

More than a decade ago, FREAK HEAT WAVES emerged from Canada’s stark Midwestern prairies, establishing their voice through early cassette-based experiments and DIY performances. Over the years, the group’s live incarnations evolved as they endured a rigorous and nearly non-stop touring schedule. When not on the road, the Freaks became hermits, engaging in countless writing/production sessions that grew increasingly complex, eventually forcing them to travel beyond guitar, bass and drums. Their home studios continuously relocated, advanced and diversified. New instruments started to appear and new trajectories were explored. The studio process became more dynamic, involving many overdubs, avant-garde recording techniques, experimental sound design and orchestrations that utilized legendary effects, drum machines and synths. Tireless curiosity fueled the duo as they merged their original sound with new discoveries and seemingly disparate influences. With their latest work, Zap The Planet, the Freaks find themselves splitting coasts in Montreal and Victoria, distanced by geography and time, connecting via serial transmission tethered to a lone ethernet terminal. Extenuating logistics can unexpectedly prompt innovation. No Freak Heat Waves record has followed a singular path and no two are alike. Each album is an evolution in musical direction, songwriting and conceptualization. With Zap the Planet, (their second album on Telephone Explosion,) the duo have manifested more of their intrinsically unique vision and become more pronounced in their unhinged artistic process. The follow up to 2017’s Beyond XXXL finds the Freaks taking a fearless, inventive leap to create the greatest departure from their previous work. There are no fads here, no accidents either. Freak Heat Waves give us a record full of lo-fi digital grit and early MIDI instrumentation. Dirty samples crackle as they skate over immense analog synths. Future Islands: As Long As You Are
(4AD) LP

As Long As You Are looks to the past as well as the future, confronting old ghosts and embracing a new hope. It is an album about trust, full of honesty, redemption and “letting go”, allowing old wounds to heal and bringing painful chapters to a close. As Long As You Are also signals a new era for Future Islands. Drummer Mike Lowry officially joins as a fully-fledged member and songwriter bolstering the founding trio of William Cashion, Samuel T Herring and Gerrit Whelmers. Together, the four-piece took on official production duties for the first time, co-producing As Long As You Are with engineer Steve Wright at his Wrightway Studios in Baltimore. Musically, their brand of new wave synth-pop full of bright melodies and heavenly choruses is as euphoric and uninhibitedly joyful as anything the band has done in their 14-year career.

Gatecreeper: Deserted (Relapse) LP
Gatecreeper return with their highly anticipated new album Deserted. The record, a furious mix of snarling guitars and driving, rhythmic pummeling, takes death metal from its 80’s Floridian roots and 90’s Swedish expansion straight into the here and now. In fact, the vanguard of death metal in 2019 can be found under Arizona’s searing sun. That’s where Gatecreeper members – Chase Mason, guitarist Eric Wagner, bassist Sean Mears, drummer Matt Arrebollo and guitarist Nate Garrett – make their homes. Of course, the band nodded to their scorching home state with the title of their 2016 full-length debut, Sonoran Depravation. The theme continues on Deserted, which boasts songs like “Sweltering Madness,” “Boiled Over” and the double-meaning title track. You can hear the results on “From The Ashes,” a crushing cut primed for the European festival circuit. Over on side two, “Boiled Over” fuses classic Bolt Thrower with the pulverizing power grooves of sludge titans Crowbar. Album closer “Absence Of Light” upholds Gatecreeper’s tradition of finishing their records with a deathly doom dirge. Deserted was recorded at Homewrecker Studios in Tucson, where Gatecreeper co-produced the album with engineer Ryan Bram. Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou handled the mix at Godcity in Salem, MA, and Brad Boatright mastered the album at Audiosiege in Portland, OR. Deserted’s hallucinatory cover art was created by Brad Moore (Tomb Mold, Morpheus Descends).

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: Soundkeeper
(Three Lobed) LP

Steve Gunn and John Truscinski’s collaborations are point where experimental instrumental rock and cosmic jazz meet. This is their fourth album overall and first in three years. Gunn-Truscinski Duo fans are intense in their love of these records – they naturally spin off from Steve’s solo work but also go in their own directions as well. This track – and album – will be rapturously received by the fans of this project as being cut from a similar cloth that they already know and enjoy but covering some different and previously unworn ground. The first release in the Three Lobed Recordings 20th anniversary series, this should be a title with multiple sales points (Gunn, Three Lobed, other participants in the 20th series).

Sometimes it leads to dark depression, but sometimes gives a feeling of euphoria, it is still vivid as Afro-centric jazz. With its quality and rarity, it has been always wanted all over the world. Representing “Ode To Workman” from J Jazz : Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984 released on BBE, in his session with local NY musicians, Journey To Air along with three other reissues are so important pieces in 1970s independent jazz. In 1970, after breaking up his legendary quintet band, Terumasa Hino moved his base to US. Journey To Air record shows his great effort in his long-term session with the local musicians, and is very important to know Jazz scene in New York at that time. With Steve Grossman, Dave Liebman, and Dave Holland, Terumasa Hino produced avant-garde and creative sound that is one and only in the world. Original released in 1970 from Love Records. Pablo’s Eye: Dark Matter (Stroom) LP
Following the releases of the vinyl compilation Spring Break and the maxi 12” compilation Bardo for Pablo, Dark Matter is part 3 in the Pablo’s Eye trilogy of selected works on Stroom. More than anything, Pablo’s Eye is a temporary atmosphere, like a taste or a dream… “Then there is the sound of silence. Usually, it would be true to say that there is no such thing as silence; no matter where you are, you will always hear the sound of your heartbeat & the blood rushing through your veins. I was a sound pioneer. As the alchemist mixed material & chemicals in the hope of creating new substances, so I mixed sounds and silences in the hope of creating new sites for infinite meditation. John Prine: Prime Prine (Rhino) LP
Fittingly for a former mailman, John Prine delivers songs that are both literate and personal. Since his 1971 debut, the singer-songwriter has enjoyed widespread critical acclaim, and to judge from PRINE PRINE, it’s easy to see why. The 1976 best-of gathers tracks from Prine’s first four albums for Atlantic Records, and every one’s a winner – from “Sam Stone,” “Illegal Smile,” “Dear Abby” and “Hello In There,” this is a skilled and compassionate storyteller at the top of his game. Though the performer’s ongoing career produced further highlights, the aptly titled PRIME PRIME is a marvelous snapshot of his early classics.

Suso Saiz: Nothing is Objective (Music From Memory) LP
Spanish ambient composer Suso Saiz deepens his relationship with Music From Memory with the release of a new album, Nothing Is Objective. This joins 2017’s Rainworks as his second full-length album for the label, following archival collections of solo music and of his group Orquesta De Las Nubes. Nothing Is Objective was recorded in Madrid in 2018 during a period of transcendental change and creative awakening for Suso. It captures the composer as he develops a renewed relationship with his instruments and craft, channeling a dialogue between the meticulous use of technology and the outer reaches of human expression. Suso’s universe is one that remains in constant mutation and emphasizes time above all else. His radiant drones are a nest of hidden feelings; they glisten with complex emotions and textures, teasing out moods of vulnerability and hope. Nothing Is Objective is a delicate and intimate record that harnesses smalls drops of sentiment for listeners to withdraw into. Released in a gatefold 2xLP it features collaborations with Austrian guitarist Christian Fennesz, liner notes by John Gómez, and music dedicated to Suso’s friend, the late Mexican musician Jorge Reyes. Nothing Is Objective cements Suso’s place as one of the label’s central and most loved artists.

Suso Saiz & Suzanne Kraft: Between No Things (Music From Memory) LP
MFM048 sees the release of a special collaboration between two unique voices within the ambient landscape, Suso Sáiz & Suzanne Kraft (SK U KNO), with their collective debut album ‘Between No Things’. Whilst having first connected at a Gaussian Curve release show in Amsterdam back in 2017, in which both musicians also performed, the two really got to know each other during a three day recording session that followed immediately after; “We would have good chats and laugh setting up and in between long takes but, for the most part, we almost didn’t talk when recording.” An instant apparent chemistry between both was present and which, via effortless experimental jams, resulted in over 30 hours of raw material that would sit silently untouched until the tracks were slowly narrowed down to a potential album in late 2018. Treated with overdubs and edits by the duo at Suso’s studio in Madrid in 2019, the album slowly began to take on it’s final form. It would eventually be completed when Suso sent one final piece, resulting in something of a remote jam session between the two, which would become the closer of the record as well as the title song. Fully improvised, ‘Between No Things’ is an honest musical reflection of a new friendship between two kindred musical spirits, in its purest form.

Sufjan Stevens: The Ascension (Asthmatic Kitty) LP
Clear vinyl edition! The Ascension is the eighth studio album from singer, songwriter and composer Sufjan Stevens and is the long awaited follow-up to Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell. One of the most acclaimed albums of 2015, The New York Times praised Carrie & Lowell as “restrained and meticulous” while Pitchfork declared it “a masterpiece.” In the time between Carrie & Lowell and the forthcoming The Ascension, Stevens also released Oscar-nominated music for the Luca Guadagnino film Call Me By Your Name; a collaborative album entitled Planetarium with Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner (The National) and James Mcalister; The Decalogue, a solo piano work performed by Timo Andres; and scored several works for ballet: Reflections (Houston Ballet) and Principia (NYCB). The Ascension is musically expansive and sweeping in thematic scope.

Talking Heads: 77 (Rhino) LP       
Rocktober green vinyl version! Talking Heads: 77 is the ever auspicious debut album from what was the most highly touted new wave band to ever emerge from New York’s CBGB’s scene and it immediately set them apart from their counterparts in both sound and scope. Both unique and infectious, David Byrne’s high, yelping tenor serves as the perfect complement to the band’s tightly-wound yet kinetic rhythms here, making for a tuneful collection of songs highlighted by the twisted anthem “Psycho Killer” and the joyous “Pulled Up.”

Young Marco: Bahasa (Island of the Gods) LP
In 2014 Young Marco travelled to the islands of Indonesia, visiting several islands within the archipelago including Bali. The voyage was on invitation by Island of the Gods Records; allowing Marco to immerse himself in the Indigenous culture that still exists in Indonesia. For Marco it was also a look back to his Indonesian roots, with his late grandfather born and raised in Indonesia. The brief was to capture the spirit, ambience and atmosphere of the islands as part of the labels ‘Island Explorer’ album series. The project embodies the ‘east meets west’ approach the label has become known for in regards to cultures colliding. A respectful collaboration between local musicians who have played to their gods, unchanged in thousands of years alongside Marco’s contemporary expression. They are connected only through the universal language of sound and a mutual willingness to collaborate and experiment. A number of sessions were arranged- recording gamelan, gong and bamboo musicians from nearby temples. Island instruments and organic sounds meeting Marcos drum machines and synthesizers in a number of improvised jam sessions. Field recordings were also gathered from jungles, oceans and streets- capturing both the ambient and chaotic side of life in Indonesia. These sounds and recordings were taken back into Marco’s Amsterdam studio and re interpreted into the Bahasa allbum – a sonic expression that captures the mood and atmosphere of the islands through the eyes and ears of Young Marco. Almost 5 years after the trip the project is now available!

Yo La Tengo: Sleepless Nights (Matador) LP
Yo La Tengo’s six-song EP, Sleepless Night features the new tune “Bleeding” plus covers of songs by The Byrds, The Delmore Brothers, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Lane, and The Flying Machine. The tracks on Sleepless Night were initially released as one side of an LP included within a limited-edition catalogue (published by LACMA and DelMonico Books/Prestel) for the LACMA exhibition, Yoshitomo Nara, the first international retrospective for the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. A longtime YLT fan, Nara worked in collaboration with the group – Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, and James McNew – to choose the EP’s songs. This Matador version of the EP is a single-sided 12″ with original cover art by Nara, a drawing of the band by Hubley, and an illustration by McNew etched on the record’s flip.

Various: Stone Free – Tribute to Jimi Hendrix (Reprise) LP
Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix is a 1993 album recorded by various artists in tribute to Jimi Hendrix. The artists were drawn from many genres of popular music. Contributors include his classic rock contemporaries Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, blues man Buddy Guy, classical violinist Nigel Kennedy, alternative pop/rock bands Belly and Spin Doctors, hip hop artists P. M. Dawn, among others. According to the liner notes, the “artists were encouraged to not only record one of their own personal favorites but to also place their stamp on Jimi’s songs.” Several artists recorded radically different interpretations, particularly, P. M. Dawn, The Cure, Nigel Kennedy and Pat Metheny. Some artists, on the other hand, recorded versions that were rather similar to the originals. The band M.A.C.C. is made up of Mike McCready (guitarist from Pearl Jam), Jeff Ament (bassist from Pearl Jam), Matt Cameron (drummer for Soundgarden and later for Pearl Jam), and Chris Cornell (singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave). The cover of “Hey Baby (Land of the New Rising Sun)” is their only known recording. All four members of this group had previously worked together on the Temple of the Dog project, and the song “Hey Baby (Land of the New Rising Sun)” was added to Temple of the Dog’s live set in 2016. Eric Clapton’s backing group on the title track includes the three original core members of Chic (Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson) and is the last recording on which all three played together.
