jonas munk – pan – el paraiso – lp
- in tomorrow. this is the first solo effort from jonas munk released under his own name. with pan‘s motorik analog synthesizer patterns and its warm, fuzzy drones, the influence from 1970s german synthesizer and new age music, such as early kraftwerk, ashra and popol vuh, is apparent from the first note. but there’s also definite traits of american styles running through this album, from the flowing optimism of alice coltrane and terry riley to the modern-day psychedelia of comets on fire and bardo pond. pan is all about analog machines, 30+ year-old synthesizers, detuned guitars and heavily-cranked vacuum tube amplifiers weaving together in fuzzy, pulsating glory.
conor oberst & the mystic valley band – one of my kind – team love – cd+dvd
- phil shaffart was not hired by conor oberst to make the film ‘one of my kind’. he was hired to make sure the guitars stayed in tune. but phil had a video camera with him as the mystic valley band came together for the first time at valle mistico in tepoztlan, mexico in january of 2008 and so he started filming what he sensed was something special, capturing the evolution of a group of musicians that started out as not much more than an idea for a different way to make a record and ended up being a fully realzied rock band. to accompany this, eleven songs are added from the outtakes of both mystic valley sessions on cd and 180 gram vinyl. vinyl soon.

- in tomorrow. with the western world’s recent access to the ethiopian music of the 1970s, the focus has been almost solely on the amhara music of addis ababa. the oromo people, the largest ethnic group, hasn’t been equally represented. ali birra, the biggest oromo star and a hero to his people was so beloved that he did break into the amhara dominated record market. learning how to play the guitar using the tuning for an oud, the sound is as much arabic as ethiopian. with a prevalent joy and catchy sing along style, ali sings songs of love, misery, and beating the oppressor.

- in tomorrow. dope body formed in december-of-2008-baltimore as an experiment in musical instincts, jamming and writing the simplest one-part / one-riff / one-minute little jerk-off songs that were the first thing to come to mind (most ended up on their first tape 20 pound brick). natural history is dope body in possession of what might be their most commercially accessible album ever- especially if your idea of “commercially accessible” is half-machine lips moves, psychic, powerless…, or “salad days”-era punk.

- in tomorrow. it’s important to keep listeners on their toes and spectrum spools is fully psyched to hit you with an album of delusional blues — littered with fractured synth, feedback and seriously cryptic personal content. one of spectrum spools’ first releases with strong lyrical focus, alex knocks it out of the park with his synthetic voice resonating like a wasted robert ashley on ambien. the tracks rage with a one-man twin infinitives style, with guitar riffs so fucked that they make neil haggerty sound like les paul. damaged, random syn-drum triggers and ms-10 crackling go fully ballistic over dark and personal narratives. if you miss bands like shadow ring and royal trux, but wonder where the logical next step would be in their absence: step in this direction — we promise you’ll be pleased.

- i’m going to say it… REISSUE OF THE YEAR!!!! “this outstanding deluxe box-set delivers an excellent and extensive overview of john benders music-output recorded between 1976-1985. john bender is without any doubt, the protagonist, if not the inventor of a whole musical-genre known as cold minimal wave/synth. his synthesizer-sounds already carried elements of techno and acid-beats while techno was still to be invented a decade later. his voice and his partially sentimental and mourning lyrics made his music to something outstanding and extraordinary, unheard before in this mixture. his three self-released lp’s “i don’t remember now” (1980), “plaster falling” (1981) and “pop surgery” (1983) are a must-have for every serious collector and interested person in such cold-wave/minimal-synth/techno-sounds. the lp’s “plaster falling“ and “pop surgery“ contain selections from several tape-releases known as “plaster: the prototypes“ (1981), “packing list” (1982), “at the 4th street cage 1/83″ (1983) & “do the cage” (1983) which compiled many of his recordings done between 1979 and 1983. the 7lp-folder-set includes all and even extended versions from those three lp’s released on his own label record sluts plus most of his recordings from the 4 official tape-releases mentioned. in addition to these official vinyl and tape-releases the box also contains an extract of the soundtrack-recording to “johnny vortex” (1985) as well as tracks from two archive-tapes with previously unreleased material recorded in 1976 (pre record-sluts) and 1978.” if you’ve ever seen a vinyl-on-demand boxset you know that these things are made with the highest attention to detail. beautifully packaged sets shipped with the lps outside the box so that nothing gets damaged before you get your hands on it. this set is even more astounding seeing as until now, john bender was essentially a phantom, but now there are notes from john himself! highest recommendation!!!!

*pye corner audio – black mill tapes volumes 1 & 2 – type – 2lp
- got this last week, but didn’t spin it until after the news letter went out….. “not much is known about the shadowy figure of the head technician, the man supposedly behind pye corner audio. there are rumors that in another life he was an engineer to the stars, and while that can’t be verified, there’s certainly an air of expertise in this bumper set of productions. black mill tapes volumes 1 & 2 were originally released by the technician himself, and have been picked up for a very special vinyl release. these collect the first handfuls of tracks from the pye corner audio vaults, and are a perfect introduction to the head technician’s fuzzy radiophonic funk. while pye corner audio might be loosely associated with the much-lauded ghost box collective, his music is more difficult to pin down. at times, the dusty soundscapes bring to mind the flickering intro to mid-’60s doctor who, but at others, you’re catapulted into a dodge-driving, neon-flecked u.s. road movie circa 1979. it’s an enviable concoction of genres, with the muted 4/4 pulse of theo parrish sitting happily alongside the wired electro of the other people place and the cracked, home-spun ambience of early boards of canada. somehow though, our head technician uses his technical know-how to pull it off, and emerges with a collection of tracks that is far more than an exercise in retro-fetishism. black mill tapes are a collection of long-lost club records, engineered solely for the woozy drive home — 4 a.m., long highways and bright lights. just leave ryan gosling out of it. cut at dubplates & mastering and pressed up in an edition of 700 copies only. ” killer library/bbc meets electroc kinda vibes… straight up 80s b-movie soundtrack action.

- massive classic of the genre…. “aphex twin’s 1994 masterpiece selected ambient works volume II includes barely anything resembling a beat or any sign of typical song structure, yet the album continues to garner adulation generally reserved for holy music. fans have been testifying on its behalf for nearly two decades, as if it were capable of curing ills or healing the soul. its synthetic construction belies the intuitive, human, melancholic and uplifting nature of the music. some have speculated the album was intended by aphex twin’s richard d. james as a farce, as if its uber-minimalism was a joke played on an electronic community that relied so heavily on the beat; an expectation-defying statement from ambient-house’s young hero. the album induces varied responses and often from the same person. a listener may go from being incredulous to drenched in tears within the span of a single track. music critic frank owen described the music as “veering between an eerie beauty and an almost nightmarish desolation.” james himself described it as “like standing in a power station on acid.” the album’s raw emotional power is built upon the influences of brian eno, erik satie, steve reich, terry riley and the orb. each of its tracks has an elegiac and desolate feel far removed from the tooth-rattling, drill-’n'-bass or abstract electronica for which james was originally known. the soft, nimble flow leaves one in a tranquilized state. throughout the album, james resists the temptation to layer the sound with beats or samples. instead, he relies on swathes of sound and harmonics and almost-implied pulses. when the music does incorporate subtle industrial sounds, rhythmic drums or muted samples, it is only to affect a menacing feel in the textures. remarkably, for an album that is often perceived as difficult, selected ambient works volume II is quite accessible. featured in films, commercials and video games, the music continues to offer an entry point for listeners new to the ambient genre while remaining a classic touted by connoisseurs.”

allo darlin’ – europe – slumberland – lp
- darlings of the international indie pop scene, the london-based four-piece creates perfect, sophisticated pop gems and knows how to put on a effervescent, fun-filled live show. achingly personal, incredibly poignant and familiar all at once. there’s a sense that europe reflects the changes in the world since their debut in 2009-with riots and protests across the globe and a deepening feeling of gloom, a carefree album didn’t seem appropriate.
luigi archetti – null II/III – die schachtel – cd
- null II and null III are the second and third part of italian/swiss composer luigi archetti’s massive electronic work on the theme of “nothing”, whose first part saw the light with the 2010 die schachtel “Null” edition. within these pieces, archetti’s thick sound-drones border on the edge of tonality as their many layers develop with a sort of “geological” pace. a trance-inducing sense of slow-motion and even stillness, alternating with subtle changes often obtained only by tiny, almost “invisible” variables. will certainly appeal to fans of eliane radigue, thomas köner and long and sustained drone electronic music in general.
geoff barrow & ben salisbury – drokk – invada – lp
- “drokk was written in a six month period between barrow’s Pportishead world tour and salisbury’s composing jobs for the bbc. even though it is a sound-track of sorts, barrow and salisbury instinctively felt that music for mc1 should steer clear of the rich orchestration common to many contemporary film scores. even for electronica the music is often purposefully stark and spare, with the majority of tracks created exclusively on the oberhiem 2 voice synthe-sizer (a 1975 classic keyboard), and its onboard sequencer used to create rhythm and drums sounds. the only exceptions are a handful of tracks which combine the synth with digitally manipulated and time-stretched performances of acoustic instruments (such as piano, violin, mandolin, ukelele, voice and hammered dulcimer).”

- the first three records from english home-recording jangle pop pioneers cleaners from venus on vinyl for the first time! ‘blow away your troubles’ (1981), ‘on any normal monday’ (1982), and ‘midnight cleaners’ (1982), all were previously released on cassette. the reissues will contain bonus tracks, rare photos, and liner notes from cleaners mastermind martin newell. it’s an appropriate time to revisit cleaners from venus, as the lo-fi pop aesthetic they first embraced three decades ago is surfacing in the decidedly damaged work of indie artists like ariel pink and more.

- there is something phenomenally enticing about a sequestered island chain, literally bounded by a vast and enveloping sea. perhaps it’s the romance of discovery—the knowledge that here lies the safety of land within the great seclusion of nature. perhaps it’s the raw beauty that is simply emerald speckled turquoise. dedicated to the azores, a remarkably beautiful volcanic archipelago that lacks very little by way of inspiration. the ambient conjurer weaves glorious tones and minimal percussion with brilliant and evocative field recording, having spent several weeks on the island cluster for this body of work.

- icelandic cellist hildur gudnadóttir presents a new album, leyfdu ljósinu (trans. “allow the light”), recorded live at the music research centre, university of york, in january 2012, by tony myatt, using a soundfield st450 ambisonic microphone and two neumann u87 microphones (nb — it was not played in a concert environment and there was no audience). to be faithful to time and space — elements vital to the movement of sound — this album was recorded entirely live, with no post-tampering of the recordings’ own sense of occasion.

- aside from their releases on survival and polydor, hard corps gained some notoriety for their unique and uncompromising live shows throughout the 1980s. it was the juxtaposition between their hard edged industrial sound and the fragile and enigmatic vocals of french frontwoman regine fetet that created an unusual dichotomy, lending to their strength of character as a band and thus allowing them to stand out from the rest. now for the first time ever, rare unreleased versions of tracks from the 1980s have been remastered and are being made available.

- hayvanlar alemi comes smashing out of the gates in 2012 with a jaw-dropping version of mulatu astatke’s “yekermo sew” as the a-side of this single. side b is an unreleased improvisation featuring the quartet version of the group. this limited one-time pressing vinyl single was made for the band to sell on their european tour, which begins in may of 2012. limited copies, however, will be available through normal distribution channels. 45 rpm.

- rooting themselves in such legendary electronic music studios such as ems in stockholm and grm in paris, stephen o’malley (sunn o))), khanate, etc.) and peter rehberg (pita, fenn o’berg, etc.) have delivered a rich set of sound experiments far removed from the harsh metal/noise blizzards of their early albums. they took a step further by inviting icelandic composer jóhann jóhannsson to orchestrate “phill 2″ (performed by city of prague philharmonic, conducted by richard hein), resulting in a towering storm of monumental classicism. finally, “last spring: a prequel” turns the whole album on its head with the abstract alien textures of the gisèle vienne installation of the same name.
*les rallizes denudes – mars studio 1980 – phoenix – 4cd
- the best-known studio recordings by les rallizes dénudés is the legendary mars studio sessions from 1980. the tracks were laid down during the tenure in the group of guitarist fujio yamaguchi. yamaguchi is one of the more notorious figures in the japanese rock underground. yamaguchi’s sojourn in rallizes lasted just over a year, from early 1980 to march 1981, but the weightless, languid weird-form blues created by the meshing of mizutani’s billowing feedback and yamaguchi’s acid-etched lines has been regarded by many japanese fans as one of the group’s peaks.

martino traversa – critical_path – die schachtel – cd
- a very well-known italian composer who studied at salzburg’s mozarteum, at the ccrma at stanford university and with luigi nono from 1987 to 1989. critical_path presents for the first time ever a selection of his electronic music works, composed between 2000 and 2008. the most important piece on this cd is undoubtedly “variations upon a labyrinth” (2000), prompted by two of the most significant personalities of italian avant-garde, the poet edoardo sanguineti and the composer luciano berio.
traxman – da mind of traxman – planet mu – lp
- one of the longest-serving producers working in footwork, with releases stretching back to the glory days of ghetto house on dance mania records in the ’90s. very strongly rooted in chicago’s history of soul, funk, house and ghetto trax; he’s a veteran and renowned crate-digger who has provided sample sources for many of footwork’s classic tracks over the years. an incredibly well-rounded suture between hip hop’s natural funk and resourceful sample flipping; the hyper-kinetic innovation of footwork’s stop-start, half-time to double-speed drum programming; and a deep respect and understanding of Chicago’s house music past that few producers can match.

*ike reiko – kokotsu no sekai – bamboo – lp
- finally a reissue on vinyl!!! one of the sexiest records ever! “although ike reiko was a mere 17 years of age when she recorded 1971′s kokotsu no sekai, she was already a star in the world of japanese erotic movies. despite the tough-gal image, the music is pretty darn life-affirming, so don’t think for a second you’re getting an easy listening album here — this is about as sexual as music can get. throw “french kiss” out of the window and give a kiss goodbye to your serge gainsbourg records, ike reiko is more sizzling than a branding iron as it makes its mark on the farmer’s herd. the sex is literally dripping from every note on this record — the style is “iroke kayôkyoku” or erotic kayôkyoku (kayôkyoku being a style of japanese pop) but the sort of naïve jazz and pseudo spy theme movie music is all draped in a shroud of sexual shouts, screams and coos from the clearly excited reiko. one must assume that she was in some kind of state of euphoria in the recording studio from the evidence on offer here, either that or she’s a pretty realistic faker — it’s a smouldering collision, and that’s about all that needs to be said. kokotsu no sekai has to be one of the finest gifts for the music fan in search of that killer oddity. first 180 gram vinyl reissue.

- vintage french synth experiments and free-rock from art house femme vamp films. two key scores by two of his regular collaborators, and bookending his most creative and lauded decade, the release of two original soundtracks to french director jean rollin’s fascination (1979) and requiem pour un vampire (1972) mark finders keepers’ latest release in a series of tributes to ‘frances first-ever vampire film director’ and a long running patron of the paris underground theatre, comic art and alternative literature movements.

- one of the most experimental bands of the italian prog scene, dedalus were founded at the beginning of the ’70s by michele bonansone (keyboards, cello, vocals) and marco di castri (guitar, saxophone) in pinerolo, near turin. their first eponymous lp consists of instrumental jazz-rock compositions, influenced by artists like nucleus, miles davis, soft machine, stockhausen and many other musical innovators of the time. dedalus was originally released in 1973.

- one of the most obscure u.s. private pressings from the late ’60s/early ’70s. for many years, the misty hush revival name was only a rumor whispered in collector’s circles, with only a handful of copies known of the original album around today. like the bachs or the index, this is one of those hard-to-describe albums which seems to live in a world of its own. despite the late 1972 release date, the music here sounds more late ’60s than early ’70s and the whole album has a cool, lost-in-time atmosphere. the group were in fact a club band from new jersey, but surprisingly all the tracks are originals — no cover versions — and they range from fragile, dreamy pop-psych numbers to raw garage, fuzzed-out jams and teen-beat sounds.
*stephen o’malley & steve noble – st. francis duo – bo weavil – 2lp
- having played together in Æthenor for the last couple of years, steve noble and stephen o’malley came together to play as a duo at café oto in 2011. these recordings are the result of these two hot and sticky nights in east london. noble sets the recording off with a full tribal charge, while o’malley, instead of firing off a shard of ecstatic notes and chords, coaxes his guitar into singing a slow, ever-growing roar. but soon the two are off into some wild, creative rampages — exciting drum and guitar territory sounding at times not too dissimilar to haino’s fushitsusha, brutally beautiful, shredded riffs from o’malley meet with noble’s exuberant rhythmic force .

- the courtship of ambient music and traditional songform has been a long and tenuous one, almost to the point that their differences seem irreconcilable. thus it is little wonder that there are so few practitioners of its delicate equilibrium. orcas — comprised of haze-pop auteur benoît pioulard and post-minimalist composer rafael anton irisarri — is an imaginative return to that narrative. theirs is a style deeply rooted in personal variations on songform and ambient craft, and as a duo they bridge the furthest outlying aspects of their previous solo work published on kranky, touch, miasmah, room40, and ghostly international.

- this legendary early psychedelic band are best-known for featuring the guitar wizardry of randy holden (who went on to join blue cheer and record a shattering solo lp). based in los angeles, they gigged regularly in san francisco, sharing stages with many of the city’s best-known acid-rock bands throughout 1967. their sole lp — a mixture of singles and newer material — appeared in march 1968, by which time holden had departed. brilliantly showcasing his innovative playing, it’s a psychedelic classic, and is issued here complete with five bonus tracks culled from rare 45s and a french ep.

- one half of the san francisco duo barn owl. ‘black mesa’ is his debut solo recording for thrill jockey recorded by porras at home and in his practice space, ‘black mesa’ is intended as a reflection on desolation and the search for light in a barren land. featuring seven composed tracks of meditative electric guitar embellished with improvised atmospherics and white light feedback, the album follows an outlaw wanderer who ventures deep into the desert only to discover the black mesa, a bridge between worlds (as related to string theory or multiverse theory). it’s the desert counterpart to david lynch’s “black lodge”, an entrance into cavernous mystery. musically inspired by sandy bull, popol vuh, and neil young, ‘black mesa’ explores the depths and expands the boundaries of ambient and drone music.

- “containing some of the best songs he’s ever written, southern nights is allen toussaint’s 1975 ‘swing for the fences’ attempt at an all out masterpiece. somewhat of a concept album, with reoccurring instrumental themes usually based on the title track popping up between songs, this album spawned at least two hits for other artists. the title track (minus the lennonesque rotary speaker vocal effect) was a giant hit for glen campbell, and ‘what do you want the girl to do?’ was one of several singles on boz skaggs’ 1976 gazillion seller silk degrees and also recorded with some success by bonnie raitt. the set also includes ‘back in baby’s arms’ and ‘basic lady.’” on 180 gram vinyl.

oi… with the busiest weekend of the year quickly approaching, things are getting a bit hectic around here, so as a throwback, i’ve gone back to the long descriptions this week… let me know if you prefer this much info. and with that, i’m going to get back to work. lots of stuff coming in for record store day next week as well as we’re going to have a bunch of nice used goodies for the record show the following day. so this might be a good time for you to sell that spare kidney you don’t use…

- in tomorrow. well it’s about time! finally a new album from this singular band! “rune grammofon presents the brand-new studio album from volcano the bear, a calculated, hysterical melting-pot of this heat, robert wyatt, faust and the residents, of musique concrète and ethno-folk, all seen through a prism of theatrical improvisations and unhinged set pieces. formed in 1995, and after several self-released tapes and cd-rs, vtb so excited nurse with wound’s steven stapleton, that he brought his united dairies label out of cold storage to release their first album proper, the inhazer decline, in 2000. since then they’ve released music on such labels as misra, beta lactam ring, textile, digitalis, pickled egg, alt vinyl as well as their own imprints volucan and volfurten with the exceptional classic erasmus fusion from 2006 being a possible highlight. on record, vtb offer stark and stunning absurdities in the most bizarrely beautiful way. recycling and re-contextualizing their material is an innate habit, and the variety of recording options they might choose (be it a highly-equipped professional studio or a second-hand dictaphone) allows their craft to be formed in a myriad of different ways. vtb have toured extensively throughout europe and north america and in concert they are the duo of daniel padden and aaron moore. absurd humor and eclectic ways of producing sounds are characteristic of their live performances and their extensive knowledge of the traditions of experimental and folk music makes the band difficult to categorize. the band record everything they play and will often use these recordings as raw material for their albums. vtb have released a number of records since the start, often mixing studio, live and home recordings. golden rhythm/ink music is their first more or less “proper” studio album since amidst the noise and twigs back in 2007. largely based on the sonic fault-line between aaron moore and daniel padden, it’s also the most focused and driven of vtb’s prolific output so far, showcasing the duo’s unique musicality and interplay, while retaining their trademark eccentricity and humor throughout. it presents “rock music” as seen through vtb’s skewed eye, featuring more of padden and moore’s drum/guitar combination than on previous albums. taking the bizarre energy of their live duo performances into a studio environment, and combining it with vtb’s eclectic instrumentation and clarence manuelo’s singular audio-work, gr/im shows vtb making their most vital work to date. includes mp3 download code.”

- in tomorrow. the debut album from batida, the brainchild of angolan/portuguese dj mpula aka pedro coquenão. a distinctly modern and vibrant project with its feet firmly rooted in the past, batida combine samples from old 1970s angolan tracks with modern electronic dance music. music is the starting point but through dance, graphics, photography, radio and video, batida expands, taking in politics and social commentary but always bringing it back to the party. being the first of a string of brand new projects, this eponymous first album sees soundway taking a slightly different direction in 2012 and beyond. championed mostly for their work in un-earthing and re-releasing classic, rare and vintage tropical recordings, soundway have started signing new acts that have drawn on and been inspired by the kind of music found on the label’s groundbreaking compilations and re-issues. what originally started out as a radio show designed to promote new african music has slowly evolved into a collaborative project crossing continents. whereas nearly all of kuduro (angolan electronic music) has no links with its country’s musical heritage, it is deeply engrained in batida’s music. sampling tracks from 1970s angola, batida is a reinterpretation of angola’s musical past, bringing it firmly into the modern day. batida’s high energy live show features dancers, percussionists, djs, mcs alongside visuals and images (both archive and new) of angolan streets, war and fragments of tribal life.
francis bebey – african electronic music 1975-1982 – born bad – 2lp
- in tomorrow. cameroonian musician francis bebey is truly one of a kind. He entered the music scene with his african compositions for classical guitar. he gave recitals while pursuing a career in journalism and then as an international civil servant. the same creative impulse also led him to write pop songs, some of which (based on novels he had written) became big hits in africa and in the french-speaking world. but few people know that in the ’70s, francis bebey delved into electronic music. the first electronic keyboards, organs and drum machines offered him new possibilities of totally controlling his compositions. he embraced the technique of “sound on sound” recording (recording several tracks, sequentially juxtaposed on the same tape). this new stage in his musical career included the production of several records (savannah georgia, new track, haiti), rarities both for their creative explorations as well as their manifestations on vinyl. this was a particularly rich period for him, as he tested the limitless possibilities of the medium, and made use of surprising and novel instruments. incredible sounds — in the literal sense of the word — would soon appear on the planet bebey. full-color printed innersleeves with notes in english and french.

- in tomorrow. one of the innumerable bands to emerge from the post-beatles japanese tour of 1966 with fab four pretentions. the mops were a tokyo quintet led by drummer mikiharu suzuki who had cut his musical teeth in a ventures-style combo in the previous spring. the line-up was augmented by the arrival of suzuki’s older brother, hiromitu, a lead vocalist with an eric burdon obsession who added hugely to the band’s fuzzy garage soul sound. not just a merseyside homage turn, the mops were a dedicated family whose love of garage rock and the nascent psychedelia would help them to create some of the most urgently deranged and musically disruptive music of the entire group sounds-era. exit, a live recording, features in its entirety the band’s 1974 last concert at nakano san plaza. features the original lp artwork and includes the original japanese insert. digitally remastered.

- in tomorrow.  the courtship of ambient music and traditional songform has been a long and tenuous one, almost to the point that their differences seem irreconcilable. spanning decades with only a few points of obscure intersections, the occasions on which the two styles have met and crossed into the pop culture lexicon have often yielded a contrary, oil-and-water form. the abstract nature of the “ambient” genre and instant gratification of the “pop” song require deft hands for successful cohabitation, thus it is little wonder that there are so few practitioners of its delicate equilibrium. orcas — comprised of haze-pop auteur benoît pioulard and post-minimalist composer rafael anton irisarri — is an imaginative return to that narrative. theirs is a style deeply rooted in personal variations on songform and ambient craft, and as a duo they bridge the furthest outlying aspects of their previous solo work published on kranky, touch, miasmah, room40, and ghostly international. here, song and abstraction become one entity, condensing the spaces between to generate an arching trajectory. this co-mingling of contrasts is even coded into their moniker; pioulard and irisarri have chosen an iconic symbol of the american pacific northwest, a methodical sea hunter that is also a totem of the open oceans’ expanse. the so-called “wolf of the seas” that evokes a quiet, stately, yet powerful nature. appropriately, their music is a careful balance of chiaroscuro elements, where pop hook and spatial ambience converge. In its environs, lyricism flows as a time-distended dynamic, rising and falling, proceeding almost antithetically to pop’s typical gratification ethos. orcas has taken an immersive, fluid vector for their passions; a resonant call, like sonar from the depths. rob – make it fast – soundways – lp/cd
- in tomorrow. soundway re-issue rob’s second album for the first time outside ghana. rob was an enigmatic recording artist from ghana who cut two albums for the legendary essiebons label in 1977. neither of these were big domestic hits at the time and have since become prized amongst collectors in recent years. the title track from this lp was always one of the most popular on the first soundway release ghana soundz, and over the years, the label has been asked many times to re-issue the lp in its entirety. a stranger, slower offering than his more dancefloor funk-laden and spartan first lp, this record sees rob in similar territory but with the tempo switched down and the introspection turned up. rob’s trademark horns dominate and are supplied by the mag-2, an army band founded by leader amponsah rockson, who named it after the army unit the band played for — the “magnificent” second battalion. in 1977, rob traveled to the coastal town of takoradi in search of mag-2, which had an entire section of its line-up dedicated to horns, with the intention of laying out his proposal to them. luckily for rob, the band took him up on it. with religious overtones and a broody, slightly off-key atmosphere at points, it’s certainly one of the stranger afro-funk records to come out of west africa but with tracks like “loose up yourself” and “make it fast, make it slow,” he nails it for sure.

-  in tomorrow.  ”akos rózmann (1939-2005) studied at the bártók conservatory in budapest and took diplomas in both composition and organ playing at the liszt academy. in 1971, he was given a scholarship to study electronic music in stockholm. his encounter with the electronic tools was a revolutionary experience for him and was to give a whole new direction to his work. soon he abandoned composition for acoustic instruments and was later to claim that instrumental music ‘had no future.’ for several years, he earned his living as an organist at st. eric’s catholic cathedral in stockholm, often using recordings of organ sounds made in the dead of the night as a source for his electronic works. rózmann often preferred monumental forms and several of his most prominent works, such as ’12 stationer’ (trans. ’12 stations’) and ‘mässa’ (trans. ‘mass’), grew side-by-side over a long period of time. with a few rare exceptions, the conflict between good and evil was the basic theme in his works. the fight went on continuously in arenas and within power relations that would suddenly change. in rózmann’s imagined world, no room was given to chance. big powers, luminous or dark, would lie behind the most trivial everyday events. a large portion of tibetan buddhism gradually infiltrated his catholic weltanschauung, and ’12 stationer,’ composed between 1978 and 2001, is a musical interpretation of the tibetan wheel of life. the last part of the 12 stations, ‘old age and death,’ is called ‘the celebrators’ in rózmann’s version (completed in 2001). when asked what sort of celebration he meant he replied: ‘the merriment you hear is false, it is not genuine, it is empty.’ ‘dörr med tårar’ (trans. ‘door with tears’) from 1988-1989 is unmistakeably an homage to pierre henry and the title alludes to ‘variations for a door and a sigh.’ during one of my last encounters with rózmann, he told me in depth about how henry’s influence was significant in leading him to choose electronic music. he regarded ‘le voyage’ from the tibetan book of the dead to be the most important pioneering piece in the history of electronic music. akos rózmann showed particular devotion to his work during more than thirty active years. during his lifetime he never sought, nor did he win any mentionable recognition. as a true modernist, he didn’t compose with an audience or the critics in mind. his mission was to compose for the future. it was his conviction that the mystical energy for compositional work should derive straight from god. it is a truly great thing to witness the publication of this album.” –mats lindström, stockholm, february 2012; iona maros (soprano), miklós maros, viveca servatius (voices), akos rózmann (piano and voice). composed at ems elektronmusikstudion, stockholm, by akos rózmann. vinyl cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering, berlin may 2011. ideologic organ curation and art direction by stephen o’malley.

- the epic new full length from legendary flemish kraut/psych jam masters sylvester anfang II. ”perzische tapijten” (“persian rugs”) features 6 super heavy, densely extended jams, deliciously tribal, quasi religious, utterly whacked out pieces that eternally build and pound at the senses. high on lush drones, pounding shamanic rhythms and eastern tinged instrumentation with flittering moogs adding to the “middle of the woods” textures throughout… recorded on an old farm in sint-pauwels (between gent and antwerp), in one take with no overdubs, the band strived for a more eastern vibe and approach than previous releases, which partially explains the album’s title. following several sold out releases across a number of great labels (eclipse, k-raa-k, aurora borealis, blackest rainbow and under their own “funeral folk” imprint) the lp isn’t expected to hang around long. everything previously from both artist and label is sold out so expect the same here… beautiful pro-printed psych sleeves.

- yes!!! this amazing and unbelievably rare album worth well over $1000 is now available as a nice affordable reissue. “not surprisingly, the debut solo album by the major creative force behind the group orange bicycle is similar in nature to the latter group’s music. almost self-consciously pretty in a manner closer to art-rock (or theater music) than psychedelia (despite its richly hued multi-colored cover), the overall feel of the album, between wilson malone’s introspective vocals and the reed- and horn- dominated accompaniments with low-volume guitar, is somewhere midway between baroque pop and singer/songwriter-style reflection. it’s all rather dark and brooding but also very beautiful in its execution, and filled with haunting melodies and rich timbres, all of this despite the narrow range and limited expressiveness of malone’s voice, which — even with all of the help he seems to get from the studio in this setting — seems to reach only about half-an-octave. you might find yourself thinking of wil malone as a british equivalent to david ackles’ american gothic, which it predated by two years, but that’s not a bad benchmark to have hit, even if it didn’t bring malone much success in 1970. ~ bruce eder, rovi”

- nww were playing two nights, with blind cave salamander as support act. listening to them perform, steven stapleton felt that some of what they played reminded him of the classic nurse work, soliloquy for lilith (1988). he suggested that the two bands should explore playing live together, to explore recording an album. forward to sept 2009 when, after rehearsals, nww and bcs perform their live version of soliloquy for the first time at the mutamento festival in turin. the audience responded with great enthusiasm. the cabbalistic proceedings of that evening are contained on this recording.

yikes, this is a lot later than i’d hoped. but there’s a lot to write about this week, and piles of records everywhere. some of you have made it in and rifled through the cbc stuff i grabbed last week, but there is still lots here and some really great stuff. see below for some more highlights that are still here. loads of new stuff to today and more tomorrow. and i bought more used stuff, but that will have to wait for a bit as there’s just too much right now. anyway, some great stuff for your listening pleasure, i’m super stoked to have a reissue of ‘joy of a toy’ in, definitely one of my favorite records.

*kevin ayers – joy of a toy – vinilisssimo – lp
- yes! finally a vinyl reissue of this amazing album. i dare say this album is perfect. “in 1968, after a u.s. tour with the jimi hendrix experience, the soft machine’s founding member kevin ayers decided to leave the band. unsure about their artistic direction, worn out by an exhausting schedule and reluctant to become another part of the music business, he sold his bass to noel redding and moved to ibiza. however, soon after he started writing the songs that would make up his first solo lp, joy of a toy. his departure from the soft machine had been amicable and robert wyatt, mike ratledge and hugh hopper all took part in the recordings at abbey road in july 1969. the resulting album meanders in and out of its own affecting mood, taking wonderful pop, folk, psych and prog turns during its course. It starts with the joyful, circus-like title track and veers from the gentle beauty of “girl on a swing” and pastoral gems like “eleanor’s cake (which ate her)” to ominous, experimental moments like “oleh oleh bandu bandong,” based on a malaysian traditional song, and the driving jam of “stop this train.” it also features “the lady rachel,” a beautifully-arranged track with a haunting atmosphere and one of ayers’ most representative tracks. on 180 gram vinyl; housed in a gatefold sleeve.”

- first ever reissue of this massively cool & hideously rare 1973 rural pennsylvania private press jewel, originally released on the legendary rpc custom label in an edition of only 25 copies. this one might slip right by you on first listen, but there is a subtle brilliance buried in these grooves that’s captured the hearts of the lucky few who’ve had the chance to spend some time with the album… and once you’ve connected, there’s no turning back… one time vinyl only pressing of 500 copies.

- in tomorrow. for those swayed by the magisterial authenticity of mount carmel on their eponymous 2010 debut album: its follow-up real women finds the band honed and sharper, thus delivering what might be the best sophomore album released by an american blues-based power-trio since zz top’s rio grande mud. searing leads, smokey vocals, thundering rhythms, cascading drums, hyperbolic hyperbole… it’s all here.

- this 1967 cult classic starred jack nicholson as a gas station attendant with attitude who falls in with a violent gang and falls foul of its leader, and is widely considered to be the best biker movie of the decade. its soundtrack is also one of the very best in the genre, with plentiful fuzz guitar, sitar, vibes and more, and makes its long-overdue 180 gram vinyl reissue here.

- released in the summer of 1967, this oddball documentary focused on the more unconventional inhabitants of hollywood, such as multi-millionaire lewis beech marvin III (founder of the mysterious moonfire cult), celebrity hairdresser jay sebring (later murdered by the manson gang) and psychedelic pioneer richard alpert (an associate of timothy leary at harvard).
